Tips for Removing Auto Scratches

Auto scratches are a fact of life for almost everybody. You’re out driving and get to close to a branch or a rock kicks up, and you’re left with a scratch. You could take your car into anyone of the many auto repair places here in Toledo, Ohio. You’re probably going to be charged a lot of money to get those scratches out. Instead try some of the tips below to remove unsightly auto scratches and save money.

One method to try actually involves an item you probably already have in your house, WD-40? Yes, this jack of all trades can actually be used to remove paint scratches. First make sure the scratched area is clean then simply spray the area with WD-40 and wipe it off with a soft cloth. Keep on spraying the WD-40 and wiping it off until you’re satisfied. This works especially well if you’ve scratched your car on another car, and you have some paint from the other car on yours.

Another method is to use toothpaste. Yep, you can get scratches out with toothpaste. The best type of toothpaste to use is whitening. Toothpaste is an abrasive agent that works to remove a tiny layer, and subsequently the scratch. Toothpaste works best when the scratch hasn’t gone completely through the clear coat. All you have to do is put a small amount of toothpaste on a damp cloth and wipe it on the scratch using small circular motions until the scratch disappears. Make sure the scratched area is clean before you use the toothpaste.

Another method you can try requires two products you can find at an auto supply store. You’ll need to pick up a high quality rubbing compound, and a swirl mark remover. As always make sure the scratched area is clean before using the products. Then put a small amount of the rubbing compound on a soft, lint free cloth and apply it to the scratches. You need to use some pressure when applying the rubbing compound to the scratch. Reapply more rubbing compound as necessary until the scratch disappears. Then put a small amount of the swirl mark remover on another soft, lint free cloth and apply it to the area until the swirl marks are gone. That’s all there is to it. You can save yourself a ton by just taking a little bit out of your day or weekend!
